Out of curiousity, I have noticed that a lot of people have mud flaps... do most people get them for the functionality? Or is there an aesthetic value to them?

Functionality for me. :) My Lancer came with the rear mud flaps as standard, and I noticed that the front tends to have mud splash marks while the rear doesn't, hence the front mud flaps. :D

I came across some LEDs with built in resistors a while back and never got some... Have not been able to find any since :(
